Grace Islet is a small rocky island situated in Ganges Harbour, Salt Spring Island with a 360 degree view of the harbor and a view west towards the town of Ganges.
It covers an area of approximately 0.3173 hectares, lies at the head of Ganges Harbour immediately southeast of Grace Point, a rocky headland at the southeastern corner of the town of Ganges. The islet is separated from Salt Spring Island by a channel approximately 60 meters in width. About one half of the islet is characterized by exposed bedrock - including sandstone and granite rock - while the remainder is covered by a thin layer of sod and dark organic soil that supports mainly grasses, Oregon grape, fescue and camas. Numerous Garry oak Juniper, Arbutus and Douglas-fir trees are also found on the island.
The island is very prominent in the harbor with significant boat and float plane activity all around particularly in the summer months. The building does not dominate the site and because of the logistics of working around the anthropological sites and handling excavated material, the building hugs the ground with a minimum of excavation required. The mass of the building is broken up with changes of colour, materials, and roof planes and by stepping building elements along the natural terrain.
The structure is post and beam construction and the exterior finishes are a combination of natural highly finished materials.
Landscaping will be brought back to its natural indigenous vegetation in the disturbed areas and any non-indigenous species will be replaced. Pathways around the site will be strictly controlled to avoid disturbing ecologically sensitive areas..
